Implants and Bone Grafting
DENTAL IMPLANTS: WHAT ARE THEY?
Dental implants are artificial structures made of special titanium alloys that replace missing teeth. When we replace a missing tooth with an implant, the final restoration consists of three parts. The implant that acts as the missing root, the artificial abutment that replaces the tooth’s reduced surface after preparation and the crown (cap) over the abutment.

When should I choose an implant over a bridge supported by natural teeth ?
Fixed restoration using a conventional bridge in a missing tooth area between natural teeth requires the preparation (grinding) of the teeth on either side of the gap.
If those teeth are intact, with no old fillings, crowns, or cavities, it is advisable to preserve their integrity by avoiding preparation.
In this case, the ideal modern solution is an implant.
Are dental implants the right solution for all patients ?
In general, dental implants have a very good prognosis in patients with free medical records or in cases where patients have well- controlled diseases. Other factors that influence the outcome include the quantity and density of bone in the area where the implant will be placed, which is assessed diagnostically using appropriate digital tomography.
Insufficient bone volume is addressed with a variety of regenerative methods and materials (different grafts and membranes or laminas), depending on the case. Smoking is a risk factor for the outcome. Moreover, uncontrolled health conditions such as diabetes or immunosuppression (in patients under chemotherapy or radiation treatment) can be limiting or restricting factors.
How can an implant be placed ?
The implant, which replaces the root of the missing tooth, is placed in the jaw under local anesthesia.
In some cases, depending on the circumstances, a temporary crown can be placed immediately during the same session.
However, in most cases, the implant must remain under the gums till the completion of osseointegration. The prosthetic restoration is performed at a later stage.
